Grader

Wheels, Tracks & Rollers

Precision machine for creating flat surfaces, essential for road construction and site preparation.

What is a Grader?

A motor grader, commonly referred to as a grader, is a heavy construction machine equipped with a long blade used to create a flat surface during the grading process. It's essential for road construction, maintenance, foundation building, and fine finishing work across New Zealand.

Key Features of a Grader

  • Long Blade (Moldboard): The primary tool, adjustable in height, angle, and tilt for precise surface finishing.
  • Articulation: Most graders feature an articulated frame, allowing for tighter turns and better maneuverability on job sites.
  • Wheel Configuration: Typically have six wheels (two front, four rear) providing stability and traction.
  • Optional Attachments: Can often be fitted with rippers (scarifiers) at the rear or blades at the front to loosen compacted material or perform dozing tasks before grading.

Grader Considerations

When assessing graders, consider these factors:

  • Project Scale: grader sizes and engine power vary in a large range depending on project size (e.g., large-scale road building vs. smaller site preparation).
  • Blade Size & Control: Moldboard size and control systems are also quite varied (e.g., manual, automated, GPS grading) meet your precision requirements.
  • Terrain Conditions: Graders can operate on all types of terrain, for example all-wheel drive could be a requirement for particularly hilly terrain.
  • Operator Comfort & Visibility: A comfortable cab with excellent visibility enhances productivity and safety during long operating hours.
