Off Road Dump Truck

Wheels, Tracks & Rollers

Heavy-duty hauler designed for moving large quantities of material in rugged, off-highway conditions

What is an Off-Road Dump Truck?

An off-road dump truck, also known as a haul truck or rigid dump truck, is a heavy-duty truck specifically engineered for use in large-scale mining, quarrying, and heavy construction environments, not typically permitted on public highways. They are designed to transport massive payloads of materials like rock, ore, and overburden across challenging terrains found on sites throughout New Zealand.

Key Features of an Off-Road Dump Truck

  • Massive Payload Capacity: Designed to carry extremely large volumes and weights, often ranging from 40 tonnes to over 400 tonnes.
  • Rugged Construction: Built with heavy-duty frames, suspension, and components to withstand harsh operating conditions.
  • Large Tyres: Equipped with very large, durable tyres designed for traction and load-bearing on unpaved surfaces.
  • Powerful Engine & Drivetrain: Features high-horsepower diesel engines (sometimes diesel-electric) and robust drivetrains for hauling heavy loads up steep grades.
  • Rear Dump Body: A large open-box bed hinged at the rear, equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front and dump material backwards.

Off-Road Dump Truck Considerations

The following are the most important considerations for the operation of off-road dump trucks:

  • Payload Requirements: Match the truck's rated capacity to the site's production targets and the loading equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders).
  • Haul Road Conditions: Assess grades, rolling resistance, and overall condition of the haul roads, as these significantly impact performance, tyre life, and safety.
  • Loading Equipment Match: Ensure the truck size is appropriately matched to the primary loading tools for efficient loading cycles (e.g., 3-5 passes to fill).
  • Maintenance & Operating Costs: These are significant investments with high running costs (fuel, tyres, maintenance); factor these into operational planning.
  • Safety Features: Modern trucks incorporate advanced braking systems, operator Cabs (ROPS/FOPS), visibility aids (cameras), and operational monitoring systems.
